Over the past sixty years, Fred Ross, C.M., LL.D., R.C.A., has become one of Canada's leading figurative painters ranking among the likes of Miller Brittain and Jack Humphrey as one of the best-known artists Saint John has ever produced. He received his early training in Saint John and later studied during his travels to the United States, Mexico and Europe where he was most notably inspired by the masterworks of Diego Rivera and Balthus.
His work has been exhibited in over eighty solo and group exhibitions since 1949. The recipient of several Canada Council grants, he received an LL.D. from the University of New Brunswick in 1986. He was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy in 1990. He was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 2004.
